February 28, 2007: Genome annotation project is launched
Source: JGI & DGC

News Details:
The Joint Genome Institute and the Daphnia Genomics Consortium are pleased to announce the pre-release (or "internal release") of our first annotation of the 9,080 scaffolds and 227.1 Mbp of JGI's 8.7x assembly of the Daphnia pulex genome. We predict 25,477 genes, with the following average properties:

    Gene length: 2142.17 nt
    Transcript length: 1115.26 nt
    Protein length: 352.71 aa
Exon frequency: 4.89 exons per gene
    Exon length: 227.92 nt
    Intron length: 265.76 nt
    Gene density: 113.60 genes/Mbp scaffold

HELP ANALYZE THE DATA - The pre-release of this draft assembly and annotation of the first crustacean genome sequence represents a significant landmark for a collaborative venture among researchers aiming to create a model system for the environmental sciences. This opportunity to explore the genome biology of the waterflea is extended to all members of the research community. Through this effort, we will work towards producing the first set of publications that highlight discoveries made from this data (manuscripts are due in September). We encourage your participation in the consortium-wide manual annotation project by visiting the link below.
