Hunting for Ecological Genes :: Using Microarrays

Microarray experiments have a large advantage over other strategies in taking an unbiased approach to gene discovery. Thousands of genes can be assayed simultaneously for their expression profiles, allowing the identification of coordinated responses in diverse environments. Moreover, such experiments are not partial to functional information presently available for model organisms, whose phenotypes are best characterized in laboratory (unnatural) environments. For the Daphnia system, two key tools are in development: a gene encyclopedia of cDNA sequences and affordable gene-chips for functional genomic analyses.
